Main Street mainstay S&S Art Supply to close
There’s not much day-to-day bustle at S&S Art Supply on Main Street. On a weekday last month, owner Eric Stockard helped a handful of customers who dropped in throughout the afternoon — a mother and son buying art supplies to make crafts for their home-school lessons, a retired art teacher looking for some frosted mylar sheets.

USC finance professor Steven Mann lives full life with Parkinson's disease
Sitting in the faculty lounge of the Darla Moore School of Business, he’s wearing a short-sleeved, white, button-down shirt. No necktie, though. Steven Mann rarely wears a tie, because it takes him nearly half an hour to try to tie one. His hands just don’t do what his brain tells them to. A professor of finance at USC for the past 25 years, Mann doesn’t think of himself as being sick; he thinks of Parkinson’s as a nuisance in his life.

Spanish fort discovered in Morganton
Before the Lost Colony at Roanoke Island, before the Jamestown settlement in Virginia, there was Fort San Juan in the North Carolina foothills. Archaeologists studying a ceremonial mound from a Native American town called Joara last month discovered the first inland fort built by Europeans in the New World, near present-day Morganton.

Report: Charlotte traffic collisions down; fatalities up
Charlotte drivers are getting into fewer traffic accidents, but more fatalities occurred on the roads last year compared with recent years, a new report shows. Last year saw 14,514 collisions on Charlotte roadways, a 4 percent decrease from 2011 and the fewest crashes since at least 1997, according to the city’s annual Traffic Collision Data report .

Ellen Reinecke has a tattoo on each of her wrists – “I love you” and signatures in her mother’s and father’s handwriting, copied from old birthday cards. She looks at them often. Her older sister, Sara, has identical tattoos on her ankles.

Report: Marijuana arrests show racial disparity
African-Americans are arrested nearly five times as often as whites for marijuana possession in Mecklenburg County, despite roughly equal usage of the drug by both groups nationally, according to data in a report released by the American Civil Liberties Union this week. For every 100,000 people in the county, 520 African-Americans were arrested for marijuana possession in 2010, compared to 112 whites, the report said.
